Cracked Heels in Jaipur: What Actually Works, and How Long It Really Takes

Why it happens here so much

Skin on the heel thickens as protection when it is under pressure. Walking in open backed sandals means the fat pad under the heel spreads sideways with every step, and thickened dry skin has no give, so it splits.

• Dry air Jaipur humidity drops very low outside the monsoon. Skin loses moisture faster than it is replaced.
• Open footwear Chappals and sandals leave the heel unsupported and exposed to dust all day.
• Hard water The same borewell water that roughens hair also dries skin.
• Standing work and hard floors Marble and tile floors at home, common across Jaipur, are unforgiving surfaces to stand on barefoot for hours.

Pedicure or crack heel treatment: not the same thing

People book a pedicure expecting cracked heels to be handled inside it. Sometimes they are, if the cracking is mild. Often they are not, and it is worth knowing the difference before booking.

If your heels hurt when you walk, book the treatment. If they look rough but do not hurt, a pedicure is enough and you can add the treatment later.

How many sittings it honestly takes

This is the part we are direct about on the phone, because it is where most disappointment comes from.

1. 1After the first sittingWalking stops hurting. Hard skin is reduced, the edges of the cracks are smoothed, and the balm goes in. The heel looks better but the deep cracks are still there.
2. 2After the second, about two weeks laterThe cracks are visibly shallower. Skin is holding moisture better. This is where most people say it feels genuinely fixed.
3. 3After the thirdFor deep, long standing cracking. Not everyone needs it. Your beautician should tell you at the second sitting whether a third is warranted rather than booking it by default.

A single sitting takes the pain away. It does not close a crack that took two years to form. Anyone selling a one sitting cure is selling the sitting, not the cure.

The at home routine that actually holds

1. 1Apply balm at night, not in the morningFeet absorb through the night without walking on it. Morning application mostly transfers to your footwear.
2. 2Wear cotton socks over the balmUnglamorous and by far the most effective step. It keeps the balm in place and holds the moisture in.
3. 3Pumice on damp skin, twice a weekAfter a bath, gently. Not on dry skin and not aggressively. Over filing makes skin thicken back faster as a defence.
4. 4Switch to closed shoes when you canEven for part of the day. Reducing the hours of open heel pressure changes the picture more than any cream.

When it is not a salon problem

Some cracked heels need a doctor rather than a beautician, and we say so rather than taking the booking.

• If you are diabetic Do not have callus removal done at a salon. Reduced sensation and slower healing make even a small cut a genuine risk. This needs a podiatrist or your doctor. We decline these bookings.
• If a crack is bleeding or oozing That is an open wound and possibly infected. It needs treating before anything cosmetic happens.
• If there is thick yellow discoloured nail alongside That is likely a fungal infection and needs medication. A pedicure will not touch it.
• If it recurs badly despite good care Persistent cracking can be linked to thyroid issues or eczema. Worth a check rather than a fourth sitting.

Hygiene at a home pedicure
