Twenty minutes on a scooter in a Jaipur May is enough to change the colour of your neck and forearms. By June the line where a sleeve ends is visible from across a room. This is the single most common complaint we hear between April and July.
It is also the service people most often book incorrectly, because bleach and de tan sound interchangeable and are not.
Bleach and de tan are not the same thing
Bleach lightens the fine hair on your skin. That is what it does. The skin looks brighter afterwards because the hair catching light on the surface is now pale rather than dark. The tan itself is untouched.
A de tan works on the tan. It lifts the pigmented layer sitting on the surface of the skin, which is the actual cause of the colour difference between your face and the skin under your sleeve.
| Bleach | De tan | |
|---|---|---|
| Works on | Fine facial hair | Surface pigmentation |
| Effect on a tan | None | Reduces it |
| Visible result | Brighter, more even look | Closer to your natural tone |
| Suits sensitive skin | Often not | Generally yes |
| Face rate | ₹249 | ₹299 |
| Full arms rate | ₹349 | ₹399 |
| Patch test needed | Always | For sensitive skin |
If your complaint is "my face and my arms are different colours", bleach is not the answer to it. That is a de tan.
An honest view of what either can achieve
This section exists because the alternative is disappointment. A de tan reduces a tan. It does not remove it in one sitting and it does not return you to your winter skin tone.
- One sitting A visible lift. Skin looks fresher and more even. The difference is real but modest, and it is most obvious on the face and neck.
- Two to three sittings, spaced two weeks apart This is where a stubborn tan on arms and neck genuinely shifts. Most people who are happy with the result did the sequence rather than one appointment.
- What it cannot do It cannot lighten your natural skin tone, and nothing safe can. It also cannot fix pigmentation that sits deeper than the surface, such as melasma. That is a dermatologist’s territory and no home treatment should claim otherwise.
Which one you need
- Visible tan lines from riding or walking De tan, on face, neck and arms. This is the most common Jaipur case by a distance.
- Dark fine hair on the face that bothers you Bleach, or threading if you would rather remove it than lighten it.
- Dull skin, no specific tan A fruit facial does more than either, and costs less than doing both.
- Sensitive or reactive skin Avoid bleach. A de tan pack or a fruit based brightening treatment is the safer route, and we will say so rather than take the bleach booking.
- A function in a week De tan facial now, and the full de tan on arms three to four days before. Not the day before.
The patch test rule
Bleach is never done without a patch test. It takes five minutes behind the ear and it is not optional, including for clients who tell us they have had bleach a hundred times without a problem.
The reason is that sensitisation builds. A reaction can appear on the fifteenth application in someone who was fine for the previous fourteen. The one time it goes wrong is a burn on the face, which is not recoverable in a week.
If a beautician anywhere offers to skip the patch test to save time, that is a reasonable moment to reconsider the booking.
Preventing it is cheaper than treating it
Unglamorous, and considerably more effective than any treatment on this page.
- Sunscreen on neck and forearms, not just the faceThe neck and forearms are where Jaipur tan lines actually form, and they are the two places people routinely skip.
- Reapply if you are out past three hoursOne morning application does not last a full day out.
- Cover up on the scooterA dupatta over the arms and neck outperforms every product mentioned here.
- De tan on a cycle through summer, not as a rescueA face de tan pack every three weeks from April keeps a tan from building. It is easier to stop a tan forming than to lift one that has set over two months.
- Do not scrub aggressively at a tanHard scrubbing irritates skin and can worsen pigmentation. It feels productive and is not.
Not sure whether you need a bleach or a de tan? Ask the beautician to look at your skin before opening anything. It takes a minute and it is the difference between a result and a wasted booking.
Body polishing, and when it is worth it
Full body polishing at ₹1,499 combines a body scrub, a de tan pack and a moisturising massage. It is the treatment most people book before a wedding, and the change in skin texture is genuinely noticeable within one sitting.
As a routine summer treatment it is expensive relative to what a face and arms de tan achieves for a fraction of the price. Book it for an occasion. For ordinary summer maintenance, the targeted de tan is the better value.
This service is women only and a female beautician always attends. We confirm her name at the time of booking.
Common questions
What is the difference between bleach and de tan?
Bleach lightens the fine hair on your skin so the surface looks brighter. It does not affect a tan at all. A de tan works on the pigmented surface layer of the skin, which is what actually causes a tan. If your complaint is that your face and arms are different colours, you need a de tan.
How many de tan sittings do I need?
One sitting gives a visible lift, most obviously on the face and neck. A stubborn tan on the arms usually needs two to three sittings spaced about two weeks apart. A de tan reduces a tan, it does not remove it completely in one appointment.
Can a de tan make my skin permanently fairer?
No. It removes surface tanning and returns you towards your natural tone. Nothing safe permanently lightens natural skin colour, and products claiming to have historically contained steroids or mercury. We do not offer permanent fairness treatments.
Is a patch test really necessary for bleach?
Yes, every time, including for people who have had bleach many times before. Sensitivity builds up over repeated exposure, so a reaction can appear on an application after many uneventful ones. It takes five minutes behind the ear, and a bleach burn on the face is not something that recovers in a week.
How much does de tan cost at home in Jaipur?
A face de tan pack is ₹299, full arms de tan is ₹399, a de tan facial is ₹599, and full body de tan starts at ₹1,299. Full body polishing, which includes a scrub, de tan pack and massage, starts at ₹1,499.
