Waxing is the most booked home service we do, and the most common question is the simplest one: which wax should I get. The answer people expect is "the expensive one is better". That is not quite how it works.
Rica costs more and suits some skin far better. Honey wax costs less and works perfectly well on plenty of people. Picking correctly saves money for some and saves a week of bumps for others.
The actual difference between the two
Honey wax is a traditional strip wax. It is applied warm, a cloth strip is pressed over it and pulled off. It grips the hair and it also grips the top layer of skin, which is why it can leave the area red for an hour or two.
Rica is a liposoluble wax. It contains oils that let it bind to hair much more than to skin. It is applied thinner, at a lower temperature, and it is far gentler on the way off. That is the whole difference, and it is a real one.

Who should pick Rica
- You get bumps after every session. Small raised red spots that last two or three days are the clearest signal that strip wax is irritating your skin. Rica usually settles this within one or two appointments.
- You have recurring ingrown hair. Particularly on legs and underarms. Rica does not eliminate ingrowns on its own, but combined with regular exfoliation it reduces them noticeably.
- Your skin is dry or thin. Dry skin flakes after strip wax. If you have been moisturising heavily just to get through the two days after waxing, switch.
- You are waxing the face or bikini area. Thinner, more sensitive skin. This is where the difference is most obvious.
- It is a wedding week. Not because Rica photographs better, but because you do not want redness on a day with a fixed schedule.
Who is fine with honey wax
If you have been getting honey wax for years, your skin recovers within an hour, and you get no bumps and no ingrowns, there is no reason to spend more. That is genuinely most people.
It also grips coarse hair slightly better, so for thick regrowth on arms and legs it can take fewer passes over the same patch. Fewer passes means less irritation, which sometimes makes honey wax the gentler choice in practice despite being harsher in principle.
The hygiene rules that matter more than the wax
You can pick the gentlest wax available and still end up with an infection if the basics are wrong. These are the ones to check.
- No double dipping. Ever. Once a spatula has touched your skin, it must not go back into the wax pot. This single practice is the biggest cause of infection in salon waxing, and it is also the easiest to spot if you are watching.
- New strips for every client. Not washed strips. New ones. Reused cloth strips are still used in some places to save cost.
- Fresh thread for threading. A new length pulled for each client, in front of you.
- The wax should not be too hot. A beautician should test temperature on their own wrist before the first application, not on yours.
The wax you choose affects comfort. The spatula discipline affects whether you get an infection. Only one of those is worth arguing about.
Before and after: what actually helps
- Let the hair grow to about a quarter inchRoughly two weeks of growth. Shorter than that and the wax cannot grip, so the same patch gets worked twice. That is what causes most of the soreness people blame on the wax.
- Skip the moisturiser that morningClean, dry skin holds wax better. Oil on the skin means more passes.
- Avoid sun and the gym for a dayFreshly waxed skin plus Jaipur afternoon sun is how people get patchy irritation. Sweat on open follicles is the other half of it.
- Start exfoliating from day threeNot before. A gentle scrub twice a week from the third day onwards is the single most effective thing against ingrown hair. More effective than switching wax.
- Book the next one at three to four weeksRegular cycles genuinely thin regrowth over time. Long gaps reset that progress.
Threading, briefly
Eyebrows are the one service where speed is not a virtue. We show the shape and confirm the thickness before starting, because there is no undo on an eyebrow. Anyone who starts threading before asking what shape you want is doing it wrong.
For upper lip and chin, threading is usually gentler than wax on facial skin, and at ₹30 there is not much to weigh up.

Is Rica wax better than honey wax?
Rica is gentler on skin because it binds to hair rather than to the skin surface, which makes it the better choice for sensitive skin, ingrown hair, facial and bikini waxing. It is not better for everyone. If honey wax leaves you with no bumps and no lasting redness, it works fine and costs less.
