You will spin, jump, bend and be jostled for hours, in a heavy outfit, with a dupatta pinned somewhere near your head. A hairstyle for garba has a different job from one for a wedding photograph: it has to survive movement.
These are the choices that hold, the ones that tend not to, and how to decide between them for your hair.
What holds, and what does not
| Style | Holds through dancing? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Side braid or fishtail with accessories | Very well | Anchored at the top and end; flowers or a jhumar clip add colour without weight |
| Two braids | Very well | Playful, and keeps hair off the neck |
| Low or messy bun, well pinned | Well | Needs enough pins and a secure base |
| High ponytail or braided ponytail | Well | Cool for a warm evening, but heavy accessories pull on it |
| Half-up with curls | Poorly | Curls drop in sweat and dancing, and loose hair sticks to the neck |
| Fully open, straight hair | Poorly | Gets in the way, in the dupatta and in your face |
Choosing for your hair
- Fine hair. Braids and a bun with padding look fuller. Very high, tight styles can pull on thin hair, so keep tension gentle.
- Thick hair. Holds a style easily but is heavy. Braids spread the weight better than a single large knot.
- Curly hair. Defined braids or a bun look tidy and let the curl show without frizzing out. Our guide on fine versus thick hair covers how texture changes treatment.
- Short hair. A small half-up with a pretty clip, or a short braid with pins, works. Say your length when booking, so the stylist plans for it.
Accessories and the dupatta
- Choose lighter hair accessories if you are dancing for hours. Heavy ones tug and slide.
- Decide where the dupatta will be pinned before the hairstyle is finished, so the two do not fight each other.
- Oxidised and metal accessories can irritate sensitive skin around the hairline. Keep a barrier if you know you react.
Before and after
- Hair prepared, not freshly oiledClean, dry hair styles best. Heavy oil that morning makes pins slip.
- Leave plenty of timeHairstyling takes about 40 minutes on its own and longer for an elaborate braid.
- Take pins out gently at nightBrush through slowly instead of pulling. Tugging snaps strands, especially if you coloured recently.
- Give hair a rest the next dayIf you are going several nights, keep one evening for a looser style.

Common questions
Which hairstyle is best for garba?
A side braid, two braids or a well-pinned bun. They hold through hours of dancing and keep hair off your neck.
Should I wear my hair open for garba?
It is usually not practical. Open hair sticks to the neck, tangles in the dupatta and gets in the way.
How much is hairstyling for Navratri at home in Jaipur?
Hairstyling is ₹599, or ₹1,999 together with party makeup. 10% comes off the menu price for appointments 11 to 19 October 2026.
Do curls last through dandiya?
Usually not. Curls drop with sweat and movement. Braids and buns hold better.
Can I do garba with short hair?
Yes. A small half-up with a clip, or a short braid with pins, works. Tell the stylist your length when you book.
