A garba night is hours of dancing, in a crowd, often outdoors, with the temperature still warm in early October and the ground kicking up dust. Makeup that looks beautiful in the mirror at six has to still look decent at eleven.

What actually holds
- A thin base, built up where needed. A thick base slides in sweat. Thin layers, set well, stay put longer and look more like skin.
- Setting where you shine. Forehead, nose and chin get the most attention. The cheeks can stay a little more luminous.
- Cream colour on the cheeks and lips. Powder blush fades quickly. A cream blush and a long-wear lip colour last further into the night.
- Smudge-resistant eyes. Dancing and sweat find eyeliner first. Ask for a formula that sits, and keep the shape simple.
- Eyes or lips, not both loud. Choosing one to emphasise looks better under garba lighting and is easier to touch up.
The touch-up kit
- Oil-control sheets or tissue, pressed on the skin, never rubbed.
- A compact or loose powder for the T-zone.
- Your lip colour and a small mirror.
- Kajal or a liner for smudges, and a few cotton buds to tidy them.
- A few pins and a small hairband, in case a hairstyle needs rescuing.
