Keratin, smoothening and straightening get used as if they mean the same thing. They do not, they cost different amounts, they last different lengths of time, and one of them permanently changes your hair structure.
In Jaipur there is an extra factor most guides ignore: hard water shortens every one of these treatments, sometimes by months. That belongs in the decision.
The three treatments, plainly
| Keratin | Smoothening | Straightening | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Coats and conditions | Relaxes the curl pattern | Chemically restructures |
| Result | Frizz free, still has movement | Softer wave, much straighter | Poker straight |
| Permanent? | No, washes out | No, grows out | Yes, until it grows out |
| Lasts | 2 to 4 months | 4 to 6 months | Permanent on treated hair |
| Our rate | from ₹3,499 | from ₹2,999 | from ₹2,999 |
| Time | 3 hrs | 2.5 hrs | 2.5 hrs |
The practical difference: keratin makes your hair behave better while keeping its character. Straightening removes the character. Smoothening sits between them. Most people who say they want straightening actually want keratin, and find that out afterwards.
Keratin is a treatment your hair recovers from. Straightening is a decision you live with until it grows out.
What hard water does to the result
This is the Jaipur specific part and it is significant. In Jhotwara, Khatipura, Murlipura, parts of Vaishali Nagar and the Kalwar Road side, borewell supply is considerably harder than JDA water.
Mineral deposit builds on the hair shaft and sits over a keratin coating, dulling it and lifting it faster. A keratin treatment that would give four months elsewhere often gives two and a half in those areas. Nobody tells you that at the time of booking, and it is the most common reason people conclude the treatment "did not work".
- Final rinse with stored or filtered water You still wash normally, you just finish with a mug of clean water. This one change genuinely adds weeks to a keratin treatment.
- Sulphate free shampoo, not optional here Sulphates strip the coating. With hard water on top of them, you are working against the treatment twice.
- A shower filter if the budget allows A few hundred rupees, replaced every few months. Worth it if you are spending ₹3,499 on the hair.
When we advise against it
We turn these bookings down more often than any other service, and it is worth explaining why.
- Hair already bleached or highlighted Bleached hair has a compromised structure. Adding a chemical straightening process on top of it is how hair breaks off at the mid length. If you have highlights, keratin only, never straightening.
- Recent colour, within two weeks Wait. Doing both close together strips the colour and stresses the hair twice.
- Hair that already snaps when you brush it That is damage, and none of these treatments repair damage. They coat it or restructure it, both of which need the hair to have something to work with. A course of hair spa first, then reassess.
- Pregnancy We do not do chemical straightening or smoothening during pregnancy. Keratin formulations vary and some contain formaldehyde derivatives. Not a risk worth taking, and we will say so.
- Very short hair Below shoulder length the visual benefit rarely justifies the cost. Honest answer, even though it loses us the booking.
Aftercare that decides whether it lasts
- Do not wash for 72 hoursThree full days. This is the rule people break most often and it costs the most. The treatment is still setting.
- No tying, clipping or tucking behind the ears for 72 hoursA hair tie in the first three days leaves a permanent kink in the treated hair. It sounds trivial and it is not.
- Sulphate free shampoo from then onEvery wash with a sulphate shampoo takes weeks off the result.
- Wash less often than you thinkTwo or three times a week. Daily washing halves the lifespan of a keratin treatment.
- Heat protectant if you use a dryerThe hair is smoother, not more heat resistant. That distinction catches people out.
Doing it at home: what changes
These are long treatments, two and a half to three hours, and that is the main reason people prefer them at home. Sitting in a salon chair for three hours is a genuinely different experience from sitting on your own sofa.
What you need to arrange: a power point for the dryer and flat iron, a chair near a washbasin, and ventilation. Ventilation matters more than people expect. Open a window and run a fan, particularly for smoothening.
What we bring: the products, the professional flat iron, dryer, capes and towels. And the strand test happens before anything else is opened.
Not sure which of the three your hair needs? Send us a photo when you book. We will tell you honestly, including when the answer is a course of hair spa instead of any of them.
Common questions
What is the difference between keratin and hair smoothening?
Keratin coats and conditions the hair, removing frizz while keeping its natural movement, and washes out over two to four months. Smoothening chemically relaxes the curl pattern for a much straighter result lasting four to six months, and it grows out rather than washing out. Keratin is the gentler of the two.
How much does keratin treatment cost in Jaipur?
Our home rate starts at ₹3,499 for keratin and ₹2,999 for smoothening or straightening, with the final price depending on hair length and thickness. Keratin takes about three hours and smoothening about two and a half. We confirm the exact figure on the call, not afterwards.
Why does my keratin treatment not last as long in Jaipur?
Hard water. In Jhotwara, Khatipura, Murlipura, parts of Vaishali Nagar and along Kalwar Road, borewell supply leaves mineral deposit that sits over the keratin coating and lifts it faster. Four months elsewhere often becomes two and a half here. A final rinse with stored or filtered water and a sulphate free shampoo makes a real difference.
Can I get keratin done on coloured or bleached hair?
Keratin on coloured hair is usually fine after a two week gap and a strand test. Chemical straightening or smoothening on bleached or highlighted hair is something we decline, because the structure is already compromised and that combination is how hair breaks off at the mid length.
How soon can I wash my hair after keratin?
Not for 72 hours, and no tying, clipping or tucking behind the ears in that time either. A hair tie in the first three days leaves a permanent kink. After that, wash two or three times a week with a sulphate free shampoo.
