Nearly every haircut complaint we hear starts the same way: "I asked for layers and she gave me steps." Both people in that conversation were being reasonable. They were using the same two words for different things.
A haircut is the one service where the gap between what you pictured and what you got is almost always a description problem rather than a scissors problem. This is how to close it.
Why your own mirror changes the result
In a salon you judge a fresh cut in a mirror you have never used, under lighting designed to be flattering, with the hair blown out in a way you will not repeat at home. Then you wash it the next morning and it falls completely differently.
Cutting at your own mirror removes that step. You see it in the light you actually live in, and if the length is not right you say so in the moment rather than discovering it on day two, when nothing can be done except wait.
It also means the stylist can see what you are working with. Hair that has been coloured, hair that has been through smoothening, and hair that has simply lived through three Jaipur summers all cut differently, and none of that is visible from a photograph on your phone.
Naming the cut so you get the cut
These four words cause most of the confusion in India, so here is what we mean by them.
- Straight cut One horizontal line across the bottom. Heaviest of all the options and the best choice for fine hair, because it keeps every bit of weight at the ends.
- U cut A soft curve, longer in the middle than at the sides. Reads as more natural than a straight cut and hides an uneven growth pattern better.
- V cut A sharper point at the centre back. Looks dramatic tied loose and needs the length to carry it. On shoulder length hair it usually just looks like an accident.
- Layers versus steps This is the one that goes wrong. Layers are blended, so you cannot see where one length ends and the next starts. Steps are deliberately visible ledges. If you want movement without visible lines, say "blended layers, no visible steps" and you will get it.
And if the photo will not work on your hair, we will say so before the first section comes down. That is an awkward thirty seconds and it is much better than six weeks of growing something out.

Worth knowing: a cut on its own falls below the ₹799 mark where our visiting charge stops applying, so a standalone haircut carries a ₹99 travel charge. A cut with a wash and blow dry clears it, which is why most people book the two together. We would rather explain that than surprise you with it.
The blow dry is worth it the first time regardless of the charge, because it is the only way to see how the cut actually sits. A wet cut that has not been dried tells you almost nothing.

Hard water, split ends and how often to actually cut
Jaipur water is hard, and on borewell supply in Vaishali Nagar, Jhotwara, Khatipura and Murlipura it is harder still. The effect shows in the ends first: rough, splitting earlier than they should, and colour going brassy weeks ahead of schedule.
- A trim every 8 to 10 weeks Enough for most people here. Longer than twelve weeks and split ends travel up the shaft, at which point you lose more length fixing it than you saved by waiting.
- A clarifying wash once a month Removes the mineral build up that hard water leaves behind. This makes more difference than any expensive shampoo, and it is the cheapest thing on this list.
- A hair spa every third week if the ends are already rough Deep conditioning plus steam. It will not undo damage but it makes the hair behave while it grows out.
Nothing repairs a split end. A trim removes it and everything else just makes it look better for a day. Anyone selling you repair is selling you conditioner.
When a salon is the better call
We will tell you to go elsewhere for these, and it is worth knowing the list before you book.
- A dramatic length change you are unsure about If you are going from waist length to a bob and you are still deciding, a chair with three mirrors and someone to talk it through properly is genuinely the better setting.
- Precision fringe heavy or editorial cutting Not what a home visit is set up for and we would rather say so.
- Chemical rebonding Needs a rig and a controlled environment. It cannot be done safely in a drawing room and anyone offering it at home is cutting corners you cannot see.
- Men's cutting We do not do it. Our team is female and works with women's hair only.
