It hurts. Not for long, and not the way people fear beforehand, but it is a sharp pull and you will notice it.
Most of what decides whether a first waxing feels fine or awful is decided before the wax is warm: which wax, which area, how long your hair is, and how nervous you are going in.
What it actually feels like
A quick, hot sting as each strip comes off, then a dull warmth that fades within a minute or two. The first few strips are the worst because you are bracing. By the fifth you know what is coming, and it hurts less simply because you are not tensing.
Some areas are more sensitive than others. Underarms and the bikini line hurt more than legs, and face waxing more than arms. If you are nervous, start with the easy ones.
Things that make it hurt less
- Choose Rica wax if you are anxious. It grips the hair rather than the skin, so it pulls with less force and leaves less redness. Most clients find it gentler, though it is individual. It costs more: full legs are ₹499 against ₹249 in honey wax. Our comparison of the two is worth a read.
- Let the hair grow to a quarter inch. Too short and the wax cannot hold it, which means going over the same spot twice. That is the painful version.
- Do not shave in between. Shaving cuts hair at the surface. Then you are waiting again for it to reach waxable length.
- Start small. Half arms is ₹129 in honey wax and ₹199 in Rica and takes about fifteen minutes. If you can handle that, you can do legs.
- Breathe out as the strip goes. It sounds silly and it works. Holding your breath tightens everything.
- Mind your cycle. Many people find skin more sensitive in the days around their period. Our guide on waxing during periods covers it.
It gets easier
Regular waxing usually means finer, slower-growing hair over time, and the sting eases with it. Most people find their second and third sessions clearly gentler. That is a common experience, not a promise: skin and hair vary.
The wax itself is applied fresh. Strips and spatulas are new for every client and never go back into the pot after touching skin. Check the small print on any provider for that, because it matters far more than the pain.
Common questions
Does waxing hurt more than threading?
Most people find waxing larger areas more intense per pull but faster overall. Threading is finer and quicker for small areas like eyebrows.
Is Rica wax less painful than honey wax?
Most clients find it gentler because it grips hair rather than skin. It costs more, and individual skin still varies.
Which area should I wax first?
Start with half arms or full arms. They hurt least and show you what to expect before you try underarms or legs.
How long should my hair be?
About a quarter inch. Shorter than that and the wax may not hold it.
Can I shave between waxing sessions?
It is better not to. Shaving resets the growth and you have to wait for waxable length again.
