Waxing During Your Period: What Actually Changes, and What Does Not

A straight, practical answer on whether waxing during periods is fine, why sensitivity increases, and how to decide whether to book or reschedule.

Waxing appointment being carried out at home with comfort adjustments for sensitive days

This is a question we get asked often enough on the phone that it deserves a direct answer rather than being left unaddressed on the site. There is nothing unsafe about waxing during a period, but there is a real, temporary reason it can feel more uncomfortable on certain days, and knowing that helps you decide whether to book or wait a few days.

This is not medical advice, just a practical, honest answer based on what our beauticians see and what clients commonly report.

Why pain sensitivity genuinely changes during the cycle

Pain sensitivity is commonly reported as higher in the days just before and during the start of a period, tied to hormonal changes that affect how the body perceives pain generally, not something specific to waxing. This means a wax that felt completely manageable a week earlier can feel noticeably more uncomfortable during this window, through no fault of the technique or the wax type used.

Is there any reason to avoid waxing specifically because of a period

For general waxing of arms, legs, underarms and face, there is no specific reason tied to menstruation to avoid it beyond the pain sensitivity point above. For bikini area waxing specifically during the heaviest days of a period, many people simply prefer to reschedule for comfort and practical reasons rather than because it carries any particular risk.

If you decide to go ahead

  • Mention it when you book, if you are comfortable doing so. This lets your beautician work a little more gently and check in more often during the appointment, rather than assuming a normal pain response throughout.
  • Consider scheduling for a lower-flow day of the cycle if your dates allow it. Sensitivity tends to be highest right at the start. If your booking has any flexibility, a day or two later in the period can be noticeably more comfortable.
  • A mild pain reliever beforehand, if you already take one for period discomfort generally, may help. This is a personal health decision to make with whatever guidance you already follow, not something we can recommend directly, but it is worth mentioning to your own routine if applicable.

If you decide to reschedule

If you would rather wait a few days, that is a completely normal and common choice, and rescheduling is straightforward. Just let us know, and we will move your slot without any issue.

Common questions

Is it safe to get waxed while on your period?

Yes, there is nothing unsafe about it. The main consideration is that pain sensitivity is commonly higher during this window due to hormonal changes, which can make waxing feel more uncomfortable than usual, not any actual risk.

Why does waxing hurt more during certain days of the menstrual cycle?

Pain sensitivity is widely reported as higher in the days just before and during the start of a period, tied to hormonal changes affecting general pain perception, not something specific to the waxing process itself.

Should I reschedule my waxing appointment if I am on my period?

It is entirely a personal comfort decision. Some people prefer to wait a few days for a more comfortable experience, particularly for bikini area waxing, while others go ahead without any issue. Either choice is completely normal.

Should I tell my beautician if I am on my period before a wax?

It is your choice, but mentioning it if you are comfortable doing so lets the beautician work more gently and check in more often, which can make the appointment noticeably more comfortable.
