Redness right after waxing is normal and settles in a few hours. What people mean when they say their skin is sensitive is something more: redness that lasts a day or two, or small bumps that appear the next morning.
That pattern usually has a cause you can change.
Why it happens
- The wax grips the skin too hard. Honey wax works well on normal skin, but on skin that reacts easily it can pull on the surface as much as the hair.
- The area is already irritated. Sunburn, a fresh scrub, a shave that morning or a strong active on the skin all leave it thin.
- Bumps are often folliculitis or ingrowns. Hair that breaks or is pulled unevenly can get inflamed, or grow back under the skin.
- Heat and friction afterwards. Tight clothes, a gym session or a hot bath straight after keep the skin irritated.
What to change before your next session
- Switch to Rica waxIt grips the hair, not the skin, which is why we recommend it for sensitive skin, ingrown hair and anyone who breaks out after every session.
- Leave the skin alone for a few daysNo scrubbing, no shaving, no sunburn.
- Pause strong activesIf you use retinol, acids or peels, ask your dermatologist how long to stop before waxing. It varies by product.
- Come with clean, dry skinNo oil or moisturiser on the area. Wax does not hold on an oily surface.
- Mention it when bookingSo the beautician plans a gentler approach and does a small test area if you want.
Aftercare that helps
- Keep the area out of direct sun for about 24 hours. Waxed skin burns more easily.
- Wear loose clothes over it so nothing rubs.
- A cool compress helps if redness lingers past a few hours.
- Skip hot showers, saunas and heavy workouts for the rest of the day.
- Do not scrub for a few days. After that, gentle exfoliation helps prevent ingrowns.

When to see a doctor instead
Blisters, swelling, pus, a rash that spreads, or pain that gets worse over a day or two are not normal aftercare. See a doctor. If you had told us about an allergy at booking and reacted to a product, our policy is a full refund and a doctor's consultation covered.
Common questions
Can I wax if I have sensitive skin?
Usually yes, with Rica wax and good prep. Tell the beautician when booking and start with a small area.
Why do I get bumps after waxing?
Often inflamed follicles or ingrown hairs. Rica wax, no scrubbing beforehand and gentle exfoliation later help.
How long should redness last?
Mild redness usually settles within a few hours. Longer than a day, or with swelling or blisters, is worth a doctor's opinion.
Should I stop retinol before waxing?
Ask your dermatologist. It depends on the product and your skin, and waxing over strong actives can lift skin.
