Jaipur's sun is not subtle. From April to July, twenty minutes on a scooter changes the colour of your neck and forearms, and a lot of it can be avoided. Yet the typical complaint is 'I use sunscreen and still tan', which almost always has an unglamorous explanation.
This is what actually matters, in order of how much difference it makes.
The three things that decide whether it works
- How much you apply. This is the big one. Most people apply far less than the amount SPF is tested at, which means the protection on the bottle is not the protection on your face. As a rough guide, about two fingers' length of sunscreen for the face and neck.
- Reapplication. Sunscreen wears off through sweat, wiping and time. Reapply roughly every two to three hours outdoors, and immediately after heavy sweating. One application at 8 am does not last through a 1 pm ride.
- The SPF and the type. Matters less than the two above, but still counts. Choose broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
SPF 30 or SPF 50?
| SPF 30 | SPF 50 | |
|---|---|---|
| Blocks roughly | 97% of UVB | 98% of UVB |
| Difference in real life | Small | Small, but slightly more margin for under-application |
| Best for | Everyday use, mostly indoors or short outdoor time | Long outdoor exposure, riding, travelling |
The jump from 30 to 50 is smaller than the numbers suggest. What matters more is picking one you will actually wear generously and reapply. A lighter SPF 30 you reapply beats an SPF 50 that feels heavy and gets skipped. Also check the label says broad-spectrum, which means it covers UVA as well as UVB, and look for a PA rating where shown.
Sunscreen on a scooter or in traffic
- Apply 15 to 20 minutes before leavingIt needs time to settle on the skin before you are in direct sun.
- Cover the neck, ears and forearmsThese are the areas that tan first and are most often forgotten. The hands are worst: gloves protect the wrist, not the back of the hand.
- Carry it and reapplyKeep a small tube or stick in your bag. Reapplying at your destination matters more than the application at home.
- Add physical coverA scarf, sleeves and sunglasses reduce how much sunscreen has to do. Our summer tanning guide covers what to layer.
Sunscreen and makeup
Sunscreen goes on before makeup, and needs a few minutes to settle so the foundation does not pill or slide. Do not rely on the SPF in a foundation for real protection, since nobody applies foundation thickly enough. For a long function or a day-long shoot, apply sunscreen properly first and carry blotting paper. Our guide on making makeup last through Jaipur heat and the pre-wedding shoot guide both cover this in more detail.
Sunscreen after a facial, de tan or bleach
| Treatment | Skin is | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Facial | Freshly exfoliated, a little more sun-sensitive | Sunscreen the next day, keep out of direct sun for a few hours on the day |
| De tan or brightening facial | Surface tan just lifted | Avoid direct sun for a few hours, then sunscreen consistently or the tan returns |
| Bleach | More reactive | Skip harsh scrubs, stay out of sun, sunscreen from the next day |
| Waxing | More sun-sensitive for about 24 hours | Keep the waxed area out of direct sun that day |
Mistakes that leave you tanned anyway
- Applying a thin smear. Half the product gives well under half the protection.
- Applying once for the day. It does not last through sweat and hours outdoors.
- Forgetting neck, ears and hands. The usual tan lines.
- Trusting an expired tube. Sunscreen that has been baked in a bag or dashboard through summer or is past its date protects less.
- Skipping it on cloudy or winter days. UV reaches you through cloud. Winter sun is weaker but not absent.
If a tan has already set in, our de tan services address it: a de tan facial is ₹599. Sunscreen is what stops it coming straight back. This is general skincare guidance, not medical advice; for skin that burns easily, or anything that looks like a changing mole, see a dermatologist.
Already tanned from a long summer? Book a de tan and we will tell you which one fits your skin, and what to use afterwards so the result holds.
Common questions
Which SPF is best for Jaipur?
Broad-spectrum SPF 30 to 50 works for most people. How much you apply and whether you reapply matter more than the difference between 30 and 50.
How much sunscreen should I apply to my face?
About two fingers' length for the face and neck. Most people apply much less than this, which is why they tan despite wearing sunscreen.
How often should I reapply sunscreen?
Roughly every two to three hours outdoors, and right after heavy sweating. One morning application will not last a full day in Jaipur's heat.
Do I need sunscreen on cloudy or winter days?
Yes, though less urgently. UV passes through cloud, and winter sun still reaches the skin.
Should I wear sunscreen after a facial?
Yes, from the next day, and keep out of direct sun for a few hours on the day itself. Skin is a little more sun-sensitive right after a facial.
Why does my de tan not last?
A de tan removes the tan that is already there, but it does not stop new tan forming. Without sunscreen the tan returns within days.
