Blackheads and whiteheads look like minor problems and get treated like enemies: squeezed, scraped, scrubbed and picked. Most of the lasting damage people see comes from that handling, not from the blackhead itself.
Understanding what they actually are makes it much clearer what helps, what does not, and why they keep coming back however carefully you clean.
What they actually are
| Blackhead | Whitehead | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A pore clogged with oil and dead skin, open at the surface | A pore clogged the same way, but closed over by skin |
| Why it is dark | The trapped material reacts with air. It is not dirt | It is covered, so it stays white or skin-coloured |
| Where | Nose, chin, forehead, the T-zone | Chin, cheeks, around the mouth |
| Ease of removal | Usually easier to extract | Harder. The pore is closed and forcing it causes trauma |
| Can be scrubbed away? | Not really | No, and scrubbing can worsen it |
Why they return however often you clean
- Your skin keeps producing oil. Pores fill again on their own schedule. Extraction clears what is there now; it does not stop the pore from clogging again.
- Heat and sweat. In Jaipur's summer, oil production and sweat rise, and dust settles on top. Congestion builds faster April to July.
- Makeup and sunscreen not fully removed. Residue left overnight is a regular cause. Our guide to removing party makeup properly covers the correct way.
- Hormones and stress. Both influence oil production. This is often why they flare around periods or busy weeks.
Which is why the sensible aim is management, not a one-time cure. Regular cleanups keep pores clear, and how often depends on how quickly your skin refills them.
What extraction in a facial involves
- CleanseRemoves surface oil, sweat and any makeup.
- Scrub gentlyLoosens dead skin around the pores without irritating.
- SteamSoftens the plug and opens the pore so it comes out easily, without needing force.
- ExtractThe beautician clears the pores using clean technique, working with the softened skin. Every facial we do includes blackhead and whitehead extraction.
- Close and sootheA mask and a finishing pack calm the skin, and redness from extraction settles within a day.
Steam does most of the work. That is why extraction done properly hurts less and leaves fewer marks than squeezing dry, cold skin at home.
What not to do at home
- Squeezing with your nails. It pushes material deeper, tears skin and leaves marks. Dark spots that last for months usually come from this.
- Pore strips as a routine. They lift the top of the blackhead and can irritate skin. They do not empty the pore.
- Scrubbing harder. Rough scrubs inflame skin and can make pores look more prominent.
- Picking whiteheads. The pore is closed. Forcing it out is how small whiteheads turn into scars. Our guide to acne scars and marks covers how those form.
- Doing it on dry, cold skin. Without steam, extraction takes force. Force is what causes damage.
How often, and which facial
| Skin | Suggestion | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Oily, blackheads on nose and chin | Cleanup every three to four weeks | ₹299 |
| Combination, some congestion | Fruit facial monthly | ₹499 |
| Dry with occasional whiteheads | Gentle facial monthly, no heavy scrubbing | ₹499 |
| Sensitive or acne-prone | Patch test first, gentler facial. Ask us to keep extraction light | ₹499 |
Between visits, cleanse morning and night, use a gentle exfoliant once or twice a week if your skin tolerates it, and take makeup off fully every night. Oily-skin cleanups are covered in more detail in our guide to cleanup for oily and dry skin.
If it is more than blackheads
Tell the beautician when you book if you have congested pores or a history of marks from extraction. We keep it gentle, steam properly first, and stop if your skin is reacting.
Common questions
What is the difference between a blackhead and a whitehead?
Both are pores clogged with oil and dead skin. A blackhead is open at the surface, so the trapped material darkens on contact with air. A whitehead is closed over by skin and stays white.
Are blackheads caused by dirt?
No. The dark colour comes from oil and skin reacting with air, not grime. Scrubbing harder does not remove them.
Does a facial remove blackheads permanently?
It clears the ones present, but pores fill again as skin keeps producing oil. Regular cleanups manage them; there is no permanent removal.
Is it safe to squeeze blackheads at home?
It is best avoided. Squeezing dry skin pushes material deeper and often leaves marks that last for months. Extraction after steam is far gentler.
How often should I get a cleanup for blackheads?
Every three to four weeks for oily skin. A cleanup costs ₹299 at home in Jaipur.
Will extraction leave marks?
Done properly after steaming, redness settles within a day. Marks usually come from squeezing or picking at home.
